The formation of a consultative committee of the boards of trustees of independent and private schools was announced by Minister of Education and Higher Education HE Saad bin Ibrahim al-Mahmoud at a forum yesterday.
The consultative committee would be a voluntary entity that undertakes co-operative and counselling activities to help the boards of trustees face challenges and suggest interactive solutions with a comprehensive perspective of the Qatari society.
Al-Mahmoud referred to the achievements of the education sector in Qatar that has received acclaim nationally and globally.
He hoped more progress would be achieved through co-operation with the local community which will be an integral part of the education system.
The minister stressed the need to increase the quality of school educational programmes based on the feedback by parents and members of the community.
The education strategy in Qatar specifies an integrated and interactive relationship among the Supreme Education Council (SEC), the licence holder of the school and the board of trustees. The relationship is mainly in the form of support, assistance, follow-up and control.
“Successes and achievements are the outcome of this relationship and are attributed to all,” said director of the Education Institute at SEC, Sabah al-Haidoos.
She explained that the board of trustees is a board elected by parents and delegated by the SEC and society to supervise and follow up the academic, financial and administrative performance of the schools.
The work of the board of trustees is evaluated and supervised in turn by the SEC to ensure that it is functioning according to the set standards. She also referred to the high increases in the education budget by the state to maintain high standards and quality education.
Al-Haidoos stressed the necessity of activating the role of the boards of trustees in a practical manner. She also called for the exchange of experiences among different boards of trustees in different schools to face challenges faced by schools.
According to her, the decentralisation and independence enjoyed by schools in Qatar should sustain diversity, accountability and free choice.
