For the third year in a row, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC)’s Psychiatry Department will mark “World Mental Health Day” with additional community outreach activities.
World Mental Health Day is held annually on October 10 to heighten public awareness about the importance of mental health, and to gain understanding and improve attitudes about mental disorders.
This year’s global theme is “The Great Push: Investing in Mental Health”.
The awareness campaign for Qatar is organised in collaboration with Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar, the Centre for Social Rehabilitation (Owain), University of Qatar Primary Healthcare Centre, and Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Social Development.
Each of these entities engages in several general awareness raising activities designed to highlight the importance of early detection and prevention in treatment.
Elaborating on the occasion’s significance, Psychiatry Department chairperson and consultant Dr Suhaila Ghuloum said: “The World Health Organisation started to mark World Mental Health Day in 1992, and now more than 100 countries participate in marking this day. Good mental healthcare is recognised by the Qatar government as an important component of a comprehensive healthcare offering.”
Mental health is any psychological state that affects a person’s ability to manage their personal and professional life, and mental illness is indicative of a breakdown in the person’s ability to cope, whether due to physiological or other reasons.
