Qatar University (QU) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding with Italian university Politecnico di Torino, to establish a wireless telecommunications network in the southern African islands of Comoros.
The agreement was signed by QU president Sheikha Abdulla al-Misnad and Mohamed bin Abdulla bin Mutib al-Rumaihi, Foreign Minister’s Assistant for Follow Up Affairs and head of the Arab Committee for Development and Investment in the Comoros, in the presence of members of QU leadership, College of Engineering (CENG) dean Mazen Hasna, and the CENG faculty.
Al-Misnad said: “This is one of the ways in which QU plays a lead role in assisting government initiatives that support international co-operation objectives and principles”.
Al-Rumaihi thanked QU and the Politecnico for their collaboration on the project which will support development activities in the Comoros.
“This initiative represents the good intentions of both institutions to contribute to the country’s services upgrade in order to help the government build Comoros’ status among the other Arab and Islamic countries. The project, which is financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will be carried out by the two organisations to bring advanced technology to Comoros to enable the authorities and institutions get better equipped on wireless telecommunications technologies. The Arab Committee for Development and Investment in the Comoros will make every effort to facilitate the project and bring it to life”.
Following the signing and press conference, al-Misnad signed a five-year agreement with Politecnico rector Franscesco Profumo to further mutual co-operation in education and research.
Under the terms of the agreement, QU and Politecnico will develop collaborative activities in staffing and student exchanges to the mutual benefit of both institutions, and with Qatari national students as a priority. It also covers new initiatives that support the strategic development of industry and provide opportunities for cultural and intellectual enrichment for staff and students on both sides.
The two institutions will collaborate in the areas of teaching, research and development and consultancy studies as well as the exchange of academic materials and the production of co-authored international publications.
Commenting on the agreement, Sheikha Abdulla al-Misnad said: “We are pleased to expand our partnership with Politecnico di Torino through this strategic agreement for collaboration in teaching, R&D and consultancy studies for the benefit of students and faculty at both academic institutions. Over the past two years, we have had a successful co-operative relationship with the institution through a research study conducted with QU Wireless Innovations Center. This five-year agreement represents the mutual respect for the standard of quality and excellence generated by the two institutions”.
Director of Politecnico iXem Labs Daniele Trinchero, said: “The co-operation project fully reflects the philosophy of our labs, for which one of the main objectives is to increase networking capabilities and access to the information, all over the world and in developing countries in
particular”.
Staff exchange activities will include reciprocal visits, engagement of staff for purposes of curriculum development and review, course attendance and upgrading of teaching and research skills, participating in seminars and other academic forums, contributing to teaching programmes and training on advanced scientific equipment and methods, co-supervising Bachelors’ and advanced degree students, conducting study tours, joint research funding applications and consultancy work.
Student exchange activities will include visits to the institutions, course attendance, summer job training; and/or involvement in study tours.
