Ambassador Luton speaking at the QU seminar
Qatar University’s scholarships office in association with the Canadian embassy in Qatar has held a briefing seminar on “Education in Canada” for QU students and faculty.
The main objective was to provide information on services and opportunities available to Qatari students who plan to pursue BA, MA, and PhD studies in Canada and to motivate students towards choosing Canada as the place for their
studies.
The event was attended by QU vice president and chief academic officer Dr Sheikha Jabor al-Thani, Canadian ambassador to Qatar Gary Luton, Canadian embassy trade counsellor Karen Caldwell, College of Pharmacy dean Dr Peter Jewesson, College of Education dean Dr Hissa Sadiq, College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) dean Dr Eiman Mustafawi, Office of Faculty and Instructional Development director Dr Dalal Moukarzel, CAS assistant dean Wissam al-Madhon, QU scholarships office director Cesar Wazen, and a number of
faculty and students.
In her welcome address, Dr al-Thani noted that part of QU’s strategic plan is geared towards affiliation and accreditation with leading agencies and academic institutions around the world.
Recalling that the Canadian embassy in Qatar was established 18 months ago, Luton said one of the main objectives is to expand Canada’s scope and potential in the education sector.
He noted that Qataris are currently pursuing studies at the undergraduate level at over 20 Canadian universities and are having the best possible experience.
Wazen said: “We expect to send our brightest and most ambitious students to the top schools in Canada. The scholarships office currently provides four PhD scholarships in diverse disciplines - medicine at the University of Toronto, computer science at the University of British Columbia, and computer engineering and computer science at the University of Waterloo. Our aim is to increase not only the quantity of scholarships but their quality in helping scholars to get accepted to the top universities.”
Caldwell gave a short overview about Canada, its educational system, academic opportunities and international co-operation.
“Canada provides a consistent standard of quality education across the country. More than 200,000 international students have elected to pursue their studies in Canada,” she stated.
She also briefed on entry requirements and procedures as well as the wide advantage for research funding and opportunities offered by Canada to international students.
