The taxi fleet of Karwa is now more than 2,500-strong with the addition of 300 new Volkswagen cars yesterday.
At a function held at Mowasalat headquarters in Abu Hamour, the new cars were formally inducted into the company’s fleet by its senior officials, headed by chairman Jassim Saif al-Sulaiti.
The chairman formally received the vehicles from the local distributors of Volkswagen, Saad Buzwair Automative, Doha, represented by managing director Saad Buzwair, who handed over the documents to al-Sulaiti.
Speaking later, Mowasalat executive director Ahmed Busherbak al-Mansouri said that the decision to induct Volkswagen vehicles into the fleet was taken according to its policy of having cars of different brands to meet the needs of its growing client base.
Al-Mansouri said that the company is replacing older vehicles from its fleet much faster than most other taxi regional companies.
“Perhaps, nowhere else one could see as many new taxis as is seen on Qatar roads,” he added.
The executive director also revealed that another 200 Volkswagen cars would join the fleet either towards the end of December or in the beginning of January next year.
The company, he said, has inducted 800 new cars into its taxi fleet this year, while withdrawing a number of its older cars.
As of now, at least 2,500 Karwa taxis are operating on the country’s roads, said al-Mansouri.
To a query, the company official said that Karwa’s decision to impose a QR10 minimum fare has not increased revenues.
On the contrary, al-Mansouri said, users have become more discerning and now avoid calling taxis for short journeys of 1km or less.
He also stressed that there was no hike in the minimum taxi fares as has being raised by sections of the media.
After the formal handing over of the new taxis, Buzwair said that the deal between Karwa and his company would go a long way in promoting Qatar-Germany business relations in coming years.
