With the aim of promoting the “Learning by Doing” and “Hands-On” approach, the SSREP programme was launched in September 2010 in association with the Supreme Education Council to instill a research culture within the country’s educational fabric as early as the secondary school level.
It is designed to enhance productive collaboration between teachers and pupils, whilst also facilitating awareness of research.
Proposals were accepted from a number of subjects including science, mathematics, social sciences, English and Arabic language, physical education and other areas that are covered by the SEC’s curriculum.
Speaking at the opening of the event, QNRF executive director Dr Abdul Sattar al-Taie said all students in Qatar were encouraged to connect the value of research with the prospect of a valuable career path.
“This programme encourages the creation of a community network with like-minded individuals from other schools and places them in touch with the local industry and medical institutions,”. He said the success of the programme in its future cycles depend on how much it can continue to provide real opportunities for all students across educational institutions in order to integrate research into their school activities.
Pioneering research funding initiatives in Qatar, QNRF has also launched three other funding programmes, the National Priorities Research Programme the Undergraduate Research Experience Programme and the Young Scientists Research Experience Programme.
SSREP Programme manager Dr Abdulla al-Kamali and other senior officials including the Qatar Foundation vice president Dr Saif al-Hajri attended the event.
Al-Kamali mentioned said the advantage of the SSREP is that it encourages students to learn by practical experience.
He said applications for the new cycle have begun and will span four months with the winning projects to be announced in September 2012.
