Eleven buses were damaged and several bus operators injured yesterday after taxi drivers assaulted them and accused them of taking over key traffic routes, the broadcaster eNCA reported.
Seven buses were set on fire and 12 bus drivers injured in the confrontations in Cape Town, the broadcaster said.
One person, believed to be a taxi driver, was reportedly shot dead.
The taxi drivers were allegedly enraged by crowded traffic routes and an increase in fines.
Police used rubber bullets on the protesters while many commuters were left stranded.
“The perpetrators of these very serious crimes must be made to face the full might of the law,” regional transport policy chief Donald Grant said.
Main taxi organisations Cata and Codeta denied involvement in the incidents.
