More than 3,000 Afghan families have fled fighting between Taliban insurgents and government forces in the northern province of Kunduz, a local official said yesterday.
The government had to send reinforcements to Kunduz after hundreds of Taliban fighters late last month launched attacks against Afghan army position in the province to mark the start of their spring offensive.
Officials in Kunduz on Saturday asked villagers to leave areas where the army planned to launch operations against the insurgents, said provincial police spokesman Sayed Sarwar Hosseini.
Tribal leaders estimate that 15,000 people have fled the fighting.
