Rescue teams restarted operations to find the victims of avalanches in northeastern Afghanistan as four more bodies were found yesterday, officials said.
At least 184 bodies have been found so far in different areas of Panjsher province, said Abdul Aziz Ghairat, provincial police chief.
“The rescue teams are trying to find the victims and the army helicopters are helping them,” Ghairat said. “Still many more are under the snow and the death toll could rise.”
At least 233 people were killed by avalanches in different provinces of Afghanistan this week after heavy snowfall.
Avalanches killed 25 people in Badakhshan province, 13 in Parwan, three in Baghlan, four in Badghis and four in Bamiyan, according to authorities.
“Until now we don’t have any shortages in our aid mission, but if it continues this way, we might need more resources very soon,” said Mohammad Aslam Sayas of the Afghan National Disaster Management Authority.
Panjsher provincial governor Adbul Rahman Kabiri said the central government had sent assistance, but was not enough.
“The disaster is very big and more assistance is needed,” he said.
