At least 10 people were killed and 20 others wounded Saturday in a car bombing in eastern Afghanistan, an official said.

"A suicide bomber detonated his car in a busy area in Azr district this afternoon," said Din Mohammad Darwish, governor spokesman for Logar province.

"Six local policemen and four soldiers were killed as well as 20 civilians were injured," Darwish said.

He did not say what the attacker targeted, but said there were six children among the wounded.

Nobody has claimed responsibility for the bombing.

Separately, at least 26 inmates of a prison were injured when the Taliban fired a rocket at a nearby US army base, a security official said.

"The rocket was fired by the insurgents late Friday night," Defence Ministry spokesman Zahir Azimi said.

Most of the inmates of the Bagram prison, which the US troops handed over to Afghan government two years ago, are Taliban fighters.

"Our target was the base, not the prison," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told dpa.

"But, unfortunately the rockets hit the prison and a number of the prisoners were injured. I wish them urgent health and the responsibility goes to Americans because they built the prison next to the base."

The victims were taken to a nearby hospital, Azimi said.

The insurgents have recently started firing more rockets at official installations and cities, particularly Kabul, in an apparent shift from the previous tactics of roadside bombings and suicide attack.
