A dramatic conclusion to the Qatar Nations Beach Soccer Cup saw Tunisia crowned champions as they defeated Egypt on penalties in the final match of the tournament. |
The Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee, in association with QSports Leagues and Stenden University, launched the Qatar Nations Beach Soccer Cup this month, as part of the Committee’s community outreach programme for last week’s FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2013 - Asian Qualifiers Qatar held at Katara.
An epic final saw the Egyptian and Tunisian teams finish tied with three goals apiece after full time and with neither side producing a goal in extra time– the two teams went to sudden death penalties to decide the match.
Tunisia converted their first spot kick and their goalkeeper produced an outstanding save to deny Egypt the title after the Egyptians blew a one-goal lead in the closing moments to level the match.
France claimed 3rd place in the tournament defeating Qatar 9-4. Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee Communications and Marketing Director and Vice Chairman of the Local Organising Committee for the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2013 – Asian Qualifiers Qatar, Nasser al-Khater, elaborated on the Nations Cup’s significance for the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee:
“This is but the first part of Q22’s new local engagement initiative for the general public in Qatar and resident fans from other countries to enjoy fun events and join in their national teams’ footballing aspirations.” “Our community initiatives will continue throughout 2013 and we will announce more tournaments and programmes in the coming months,” he added.
