The issuance of law number 15 for 2015, regulating the transplant of human organs, is part of Qatar's keenness to update health legislations, HE the Minister of Public Health Abdullah bin Khalid al-Qahtani said.

"The new law enhances the country's efforts in organising the transfer and transplant of human organs according to the highest ethical and medical standards," he explained in a statement.

The law guarantees protection against the crimes of trade in human organs. There are strict penalties for the offenders, with a clear mechanism that ensures effective control on such an issue.

HE al-Qahtani pointed out that the law will be followed by a collection of executive decisions that specify the terms and conditions applicable to hospitals to conduct organ, cell or tissue transfer operations. Besides, medical ethics committees will be formed in these hospitals to determine and the material, treatment and insurance privileges for the donors and their families will be specified, alongside the conditions and procedures to grant them.

According to the minister, other issues include the creation of cell and tissue banks at the private and public hospitals, alongside the standards that should be followed by them and the priorities for benefiting from their services. Until such decisions are issued, the current orders will be applicable according to the law.

HE al-Qahtani affirmed that Qatar has been a pioneer in providing comprehensive services in the field of organ transplant according to the highest standards. He also thanked all those who applied for organ donation for their co-operation.
