Both Qatari beach volleyball teams registered wins at the Asian Games yesterday, while most of the other participants in fencing, cycling and women’s shooting crashed out without making much of an impression.

In Group B, the Qatar duo of Tiego Santos and Santos Pareira encountered some spirited opposition from Sri Lanka’s Mahesh Perera and Wasantha Devage before winning 21-19, 21-15.

The Qataris just managed to keep their noses ahead, inching ahead just when the Sri Lankans threatened to catch up, especially in the first set. Tamer Abdulrasool and Abdulaziz Khallouf also didn’t have it easy in
Group H, winning 21-18, 21-17 against the Thai pair of Sittichai Sangkachot and Prathip Sukto.

In shooting, Aisha al-Suwaidi and Bahiya al-Hamad failed to make the cut in qualifying for the 10M Air Rifle event. Aisha finished 20th, while Bahya ended up 45th. Qatar’s Said Moosa Khalfan failed to finish In men’s cycling’s Omnium 15km Scratch Race. Saudi Arabia’s Sultan Mohamed and Kuwait’s Abdulhadi al-Jami also gave up.

In judo, Qatar’s Mohamed Awad Naemi was beaten 2-0 by South Korea’s Dwak Donghan in the men’s 90kg elimination round.
