Incheon: South Korea’s Jeong Gyeong-Mi won the first inter-Korean final at the Asian Games as a judoka teammate won bronze despite fighting with a dislocated shoulder.
The veteran Jeong beat North Korea’s Sol Kyong, the 2013 world champion and semi-finalist this year, in the final of the women’s under 78kg judo.
Jeong, 29 and now ranked eighth in the world, also won the category at the Guangzhou Asian Games four years ago.
Nami Inamori of Japan beat Ma Sisi of China in the over 78kg final but there was more drama for the bronze medal which South Korea’s Kim Eun-Kyeong won with a dislocated shoulder. Kim was in tears after beating Nagira Sarbashova of Kyrgyzstan as she told of the pain.
“I did my best even though I felt really bad. I’m happy. I just don’t have a word to describe how happy I am. I just couldn’t give up because of my shoulder,” she said.
