Adequate supplies of Syrian sheep and other varieties are already available at the animal market at the Abu Hamour Central Market, a considerable number of wholesale and retail traders have affirmed.

They told local Arabic daily Arrayah that the price of a Syrian sheep is QR1,300 usually while that of a Jordanian sheep ranges between QR1,000-1,200, and the Iranian QR800-1,200, depending on how big the animal is.

Mohamed Kareem, a trader at the market, pointed out that prices are highly reasonable this year and most traders have made adequate preparations for the Holy Month of Ramadan as demand is expected to be very high throughout the period and ahead of it. "Most Qataris prefer the Syrian sheep over other varieties," he said.

Some retail salesmen said that more numbers of Syrian sheep and other varieties have been imported recently, and due to the limited spaces of the barns at the market coupled with the hot weather conditions, many were ready to sell their stock as quickly as possible at reduced prices. This caused the price of a Syrian sheep to go down to QR900 in between.

Other retailers affirmed that they expect the prices to remain stable, even though the demand would be very high.
