Doha

The Doha Court of Appeal has upheld a verdict of the Court of the First Instance to impose a penalty of QR5,000 on a man who posted a tweet on Twitter insulting a lawyer, local daily Arrayah reported on Wednesday.
The lawyer, who filed the case against the blogger, had earlier taken part in a TV broadcast on the Arab Spring and the political participation in elections in such countries, where he voiced his views on the topic. Later, he saw some Twitter postings abusing him and criticising him but not clearly mentioning his name.
He sent a message to the person who posted the tweets to confirm whether he meant him or not. The twitterer confirmed that he was referring to the lawyer through his comments and even posted more abusive comments. So the lawyer took the matter to the court with the tweets as proof.
The appeals court also decided to refer the issue to the civil court to decide on the damages and compensation, raised by the lawyer.
