HH the Deputy Emir Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad al-Thani yesterday honoured those who proved excellence in education, at a function held to mark the eighth edition of the Education Excellence Day.
The ceremony, held at Sheraton Hotel under the patronage of HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani,  was attended by HE the Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani, who is also the chairman of the Supreme Education Council (SEC), a number of ministers, ambassadors accredited to the state, as well as senior education officials and guardians of the honoured students.
The ministers praised the establishment of the Education Excellence Day which, they said, would help the country discover its scientific potential in the younger generation.
HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Ahmed bin Abdullah al-Mahmoud said the initiative was an incentive for students to seek excellence in science and education.
Responding to a question from Qatar News Agency, he described education as the “main component of development in any knowledge-based society.”  
HE the Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs Dr Ghaith bin Mubarak al-Kuwari said honouring top students set the stage for a brighter future of Qatar.
