Passenger jailed

for carrying drugs

A Doha criminal court has sentenced an Asian transit passenger to seven years in jail and a fine of QR200,000 for carrying cocaine in his luggage, local Arabic daily Al-Sharq reported yesterday. The conduct of the transit traveller, who was on his way from Europe to an African country, raised the suspicions of the Customs officers at Hamad International Airport. Accordingly, they conducted a thorough search of his luggage and found cocaine packages estimated to be worth $2,000. The traveller, who was arrested,  admitted the possession of the illicit drugs, claiming that a person had given it to him to be delivered to someone in Africa.
