The Doha Film Institute (DFI) has opened registration for young jurors who will evaluate films screened at the second Ajyal Youth Film Festival to be held between December 1 and December 6 at the Cultural Village Katara.

Those aged 8 to 21 years can register for the event. In addition to judging the films, they will take part in special workshops and discussions with film directors, actors and technicians.

Fatma al-Remaihi, acting CEO of DFI and director of Ajyal said: “The Doha film experience is at the heart of our festival. It offers young people the opportunity to become part of a truly global festival, discuss ideas and issues relevant to their lives and above all, develop an appreciation for quality cinema. Our youth jury reflects the essence of the festival as one that showcases the best in creativity by talented filmmakers around the world and sparks dialogue between generations.”

The inaugural Ajyal festival juries were made up of more than 400 young jurors of 45 nationalities.

Mohaq (Arabic for ‘new moon’), Ajyal’s youngest jurors aged eight to 12 years, views a series of short films and two feature-length movies. Hilal (‘crescent moon’ in Arabic) comprises 13- to 17-year-olds; this jury considers four feature films and two programmes of shorts. Bader, meaning ‘full moon’, is the senior jury, aged 18 to 21. They select their favourite films from among four features and two programmes of shorts.

Those wishing to become young jurors can register online at www.dohafilminstitute.com/dfe. More information can be obtained by sending e-mail to [email protected]. Registration is open until November 4.

The Doha Film Institute also offers the youth jurors to take part in international film events. Most recently, six jurors from the inaugural Ajyal Youth Film Festival were chosen to join the international youth jury of the 44th Giffoni film festival, the largest film festival for children in the world.
