HE the Foreign Minister Dr Khalid bin Mohamed al-Attiyah received a phone call from US Secretary of State John Kerry on Monday night. They discussed the situation in the Gaza Strip.

HE al-Attiyah also held a phone conversation with Turkish Foreign Minister Dr Ahmet Davutoglu, during which they discussed the latest developments in the Gaza Strip and ways to stop the Israeli aggression.

 

Bid to smuggle reptiles foiled

Customs officials at Hamad International Airport recently foiled an attempt by a passenger to smuggle a number of reptiles, including snakes, into the country, local Arabic daily Al Sharq has reaported.

Inspection of the passenger’s luggage revealed that 52 reptiles were being carried in six cloth bags, the report states.

Khalid Hamad al-Kaabi, acting director of Customs at the airport, said a seizure record was made against the passenger and the seized reptiles were handed over to the competent authorities to complete the legal procedures, according to the report.

Al-Kaabi said the import/export of a number of animals is restricted in accordance with provisions of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, the report adds.

 

Ramadan pardon for 36 Asian expatriates

Some 36 Asian expatriates from three nationalities have been pardoned by HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan.

The pardoned Asian expatriates include 17 Indians, who had been given sentences of two years or more for various offences, 14 Nepalese and five Pakistanis. It is, however, not known if people of nationalities other than these three were also among those pardoned.

When contacted, a senior Indian diplomat said most of the Indians who were pardoned had been serving sentences for cheque-related cases, theft, adultery, rape, unauthorised sale of liquor, damage to property, traffic violations, drug abuse, treachery, prostitution and others.

The official said his mission had forwarded a list of people seeking pardon for the Indians housed in the Central Prison. It was told at the last monthly community house that more than 75 Indians were serving sentences in various cases at the prison.

The final list of those who have been pardoned will be known only after the mission receives a further communiqué from the ministry concerned, it is understood.

 

Real estate transactions

Transactions in Qatar between July 13 and 17 for the real estate sales contracts registered at the Ministry of justice are worth QR1,309,463,786. The real estate registration department at the Ministry said in its weekly report that the list of properties that were traded by sale includes open plots of land, villas and houses.
