Germany banks on safety, value to draw summer 2026 tourists
Germany continues to top the list of favorite European destinations for tourists worldwide, thanks to its blend of vibrant cities, stunning nature, and refined culture. In this interview, Petra Hedorfer, Chairwoman of the Executive Board of the German National Tourist Board, told Gulf Times what makes her country an exceptional destination this summer. Germany ranked among world's most 'inspiring' destinations, survey findsHedorfer explained that the global "Anholt & Co." nation brand index, which surveyed participants in 50 countries, found that the top five qualities travelers associate with Germany are: captivating, educational, exciting, relaxing, and romantic, reflected in the board's slogan "Simply Inspiring Germany": vibrant cities and unique landscapes, high culture and delightful entertainment, world-famous festivals and fine cuisine, along with its distinguished location at the heart of Europe and ease of access. She added that recent surveys show a trend toward shorter booking windows during 2026, along with a growing preference for safe destinations that offer good value for money, both of which work in Germany's favour.**media[468863]**Germany leads as Europe's top cultural travel destinationHedorfer affirmed that Germany is the top cultural destination for Europeans traveling around the world, thanks to its 55 UNESCO World Heritage sites, which span the entirety of European cultural history, from fossil discoveries at the Messel Pit and the boundaries of the Roman "Limes," through medieval religious architecture, to the Bauhaus style that shaped 20th-century aesthetics. She noted that Germany is a special destination for classical music lovers, hosting more opera performances than anywhere else in the world, and that high culture isn't limited to major cities like Berlin, Munich, and Hamburg, smaller and mid-sized cities also offer notable theater programs, alongside festivals dedicated to great composers such as the Bayreuth Festival (celebrating its 150th anniversary this year in honor of Wagner) and the Beethoven Festival in Bonn, as well as other musical events held in unconventional rural venues such as churches and barns. From Oktoberfest to Wacken: Germany's festival scene draws millionsHedorfer added that Germany has an extremely diverse festival culture that draws thousands of international visitors annually, with some among the largest of their kind in Europe, such as Wacken Open Air, which draws around 80,000 visitors a year as the world's largest heavy metal festival, and Rock am Ring and Rock im Park, which host global rock stars. Major popular festivals such as Munich's Oktoberfest and Hamburg's Dom also serve as gathering points for tourists from around the world, alongside the Rhine street carnival and around 4,000 Christmas markets that let travelers experience German traditions authentically. Germany pushes 'Stay Longer' drive for families and outdoor travellersHedorfer confirmed that Germany is also well-suited for families and active travelers. Through the board's "Stay Longer" initiative, city visitors are encouraged to explore the natural areas surrounding them, such as the Rheingau region near Frankfurt or the Ruhr area, described as Europe's greenest industrial region. She noted that walking is a major theme in Germany, with a marked hiking trail network spanning around 300,000 kilometers, and a long-distance cycling route network of 76,000 kilometers, supported by e-bike rental and charging stations. Water sports enthusiasts also have broad options, from canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding to kitesurfing. She added that many activities are designed to be enjoyed across generations, allowing families to discover Germany's diversity and make unforgettable memories together, noting that amusement park towns are worth a visit in their own right. A third of Germany's land under protection, tourism board saysHedorfer explained that the common thread running through all outdoor activities is intact nature, noting that about a third of Germany's area is under special protection as national parks, reserves, and nature parks, something also reflected in Germany's fourth-place global ranking in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Index. She said the choice between the North Sea coast and the Alps comes down to personal taste, but specifically recommended the hidden treasures of the low mountain regions, such as the rock formations of "Saxon Switzerland" and the forests of Hesse (home of the Brothers Grimm tales), noting that every German state has its own lesser-known but charming low mountain scenery. Harz region showcases Germany's blend of heritage and landscapeHedorfer affirmed there are wonderful examples where culture, history, and nature come together, in the Harz region, for instance, the UNESCO World Heritage site includes the historic town of Goslar and the Rammelsberg ore mine, a testament to medieval mining. She added that Germany also has more than 350 certified spas and wellness resorts combining elegant architecture with high-quality medical services. 96% of experts call Germany a safe destination for 2026Hedorfer referred to a survey the board conducted in May among global travel experts on the impact of the Middle East conflict on travel behavior, which showed a trend toward shorter booking windows, greater price sensitivity, and a preference for closer destinations, while security remained the most important factor in decision-making. She revealed that 53% of tour operators expect a positive development in bookings for Germany over the next six months, adding that 96% of international travel experts consider Germany a safe destination, alongside its distinguished location and good value for money. She affirmed that despite being a destination built on high-quality service, Germany remains competitively priced compared to other European destinations, and that hotel prices held steady at last year's levels through 2026. This is confirmed by the "German Tourism Quality Index," which shows high and stable satisfaction at 1.94 on a scale of 1 to 6, reflected in a high rate of repeat visitors: more than three-quarters of European visitors have visited Germany before, and 48% of them have visited more than four times. She concluded by saying that a vacation in Germany is well worth it, and that those who discover the country are happy to return again.Source: Interview provided by the German National Tourist Board (GNTB)https://www.germany.travel/en/home.html
