A number of Qatari scholarship students in Britain have provided a set of valuable and important tips for new students about to embark on the scholarship process, especially for students in their first year, which is one of the most difficult and challenging stages of their academic journey abroad.Speaking to Arabic daily Arrayah, scholarship students highlighted the importance of mental and psychological preparation, in addition to academic preparation, emphasising that preparation for academic and living in the host country greatly reduces the challenges a student may face. They explained that understanding the new study system and gradually adapting to a different academic environment are essential for building a solid foundation for success. They also emphasised the need to organise one's time by developing clear and balanced study schedules that allow students to balance study, leisure, and social activities. The students highlighted the importance of managing financial resources wisely, emphasising that establishing a monthly budget that monitors expenditures and sets priorities ensures financial stability and reduces psychological pressure, especially given the high cost of living in some countries. They emphasised the importance of openness and respect when dealing with different cultures in the host country, emphasising that adopting a tolerant and understanding mindset helps build positive relationships with those around them, whether fellow students or the local community. They also noted that preserving personal and religious identity plays a significant role in overcoming cultural and social difficulties. They emphasised that success does not depend solely on academic excellence, but also requires developing "soft" skills such as patience, flexibility, and a sense of initiative, along with effective communication with professors and colleagues, and taking advantage of all the services provided by universities, such as academic support centres and training workshops.Hassan al-Emadi, a scholarship student in Liverpool, UK, confirmed that he faced difficulty understanding the Liverpool accent, in addition to the challenges associated with being self-reliant in opening a bank account and completing university admissions. He advised new students to prepare in advance for the IELTS and SAT exams, and to master the English language.
