UK, Qatar reaffirm solidarity, push for regional stability after Starmer visit
The recent visit of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to Qatar highlighted strong bilateral solidarity and a shared push for regional stability, with both sides backing efforts to secure energy routes and turn a fragile ceasefire into lasting peace, UK Ambassador Neerav Patel said.Speaking to Gulf Times on the outcomes of the high-level meeting between Starmer and His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Patel said the visit carried a clear message of support amid heightened regional tensions. “A key purpose of this visit was solidarity. In difficult times, friends show up,” Patel said, noting that the UK prime minister reiterated London’s “steadfast support” for Qatar following recent attacks by Iran, while also expressing gratitude for Doha’s assistance to UK nationals in recent weeks. The envoy said the discussions reflected a convergence of views on the urgent need to stabilise the region, particularly amid escalating tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran. Both sides emphasised that while the current ceasefire has brought some relief, sustained diplomatic efforts are needed to ensure it evolves into a lasting peace. “They agreed that this is a critical moment not just for the region but globally,” Patel said.Energy security and the protection of key maritime routes also featured prominently in the talks. Patel said both countries strongly support efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and uphold the principle of freedom of navigation, given the waterway’s importance to global energy supplies and trade. He added that the UK is working with international partners on political, military and logistical measures to safeguard these objectives, signalling closer coordination with allies, including Qatar. On defence cooperation, Patel underlined the role of the UK-Qatar Joint Typhoon Squadron, describing it as a key pillar of bilateral security collaboration. “It has worked so well to defend us all in a time of need,” he said, underscoring its importance in strengthening regional deterrence and readiness. The envoy pointed to a broader diplomatic role for both countries in de-escalation efforts. He lauded Qatar’s continued engagement in international peace initiatives and acknowledged His Highness the Amir's leadership in advancing dialogue and mediation. Patel also indicated that energy cooperation—particularly in natural gas—remains a cornerstone of the partnership and is expected to deepen despite current geopolitical uncertainties, as both countries seek to ensure stable and reliable supply chains. He said there is a shared commitment to expand collaboration across multiple sectors, including defence, economic growth and political coordination, while exploring opportunities to support stability and potential reconstruction efforts in the wider region.“They committed to further strengthen the relationship in all domains,” Patel said, describing the UK-Qatar partnership as “indispensable” in navigating an increasingly complex and evolving geopolitical landscape.
