Culinary extravaganza at QU highlights Korean traditions

TheSouth Korean embassy in Doha hosted the ‘Korean Cooking Classes 2018’at Qatar University (QU) recently aimed at promoting Korean food andculture in the country. The culinary event, which featured a number of popular Korean dishes, was attended by 50 members of the Korean Club at QU.“Cookingclass on Korean foods is one good window of communication betweenQatari and Korean cultures,” South Korean ambassador Heung Kyeong-parktold Gulf Times. “I hope this kind of cultural exchange willcontinuously increase in conformity with strengthening bilateraleconomic relations,” the envoy said. Some of the Korean foods presentedat the cooking classes included three kinds of rice balls or ‘jumeokbap’ (tuna kimchi, tuna and vegetables, and laver) and stuffed cucumberkimchi (oi sobagi). In December 2017, the embassy also hosted Koreancooking classes, featuring bibimbap (rice mixed with vegetables andbeef) and japchae (sauted vegetables with potato noodles).Qatar andSouth Korea have been continuously boosting their ties in various fieldsof co-operation, including education, agriculture, sports andhealthcare, among others. Park reiterated that South Korea could play asignificant role in Qatar’s self-sufficiency programmes, particularly inthe field of agriculture through skills exchange and technologytransfer.As Qatar works to further expand its greenhouse farming andother agricultural projects, including aquaculture, the envoy saidSouth Korea has plenty of skills and experience in such field. Theembassy expressed its support to the Qatar government’s self-sufficiencyprogramme even before the blockade was imposed by some neighbouringcountries in June last year, he noted.
