New building permits fall by 25% in Feb, says ministry

Qatar witnessed a 25% decline month-on-month in building permits issued in February with Al Shahaniya, Doha, Al Rayan, Al Daayen and Al Wakra municipalities registering faster deceleration, according to official figures.

The Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics (MDPS) data suggest villa construction has seen increased interests in Umm Slal, Al Daayen and Doha, while apartments were increasingly sought in Al Wakra and Al Rayyan.

A total of 638 new building permits were issued in February with the new building permits (residential and non-residential) constituting 59% (280 permits) of the total building permits, additions 36% (171 permits) and fencing 5% (25 permits).

The monthly data comes under the joint co-operation between the MDPS and the Ministry of Municipality and Environment to make use of the existing electronic link between the two ministries.

Al Shahaniya witnessed the maximum monthly decline of 48% in the total number of building permits issued in February, Doha (39%), Al Rayan and Al Daayen (30% each), Al Wakra (17%) and Al Shamal (9%).

Umm Slal and Al Khor saw 18% and 4% increase respectively.

According to geographical distribution (on absolute terms), MDPS found that Al Rayyan topped among the municipalities with 131 permits or 28% of the total, followed by Al Wakra 105 (22%), Doha 82 (17%), Umm Slal and Al Daayen 53 each (11%), Al Khor 25 (5%), Al Shahaniya 17 (4%) and Al Shamal 10 (2%).

MDPS found villas’ permits topped the list, accounting for 59% (147 permits) of all new 249 new residential buildings permits, followed by 'dwellings of housing loans' 35% (88 permits), apartments 5% (12 permits) and others 1% (2 permits).

In February, Al Wakra saw 71 new residential permits, which comprised 42 'dwelling on housing loans', 26 villas and three apartments. Al Rayyan witnessed a total of 55 new residential permits issued, which included 28 'dwellings on housing loans' and 27 villas.

In the case of Umm Slal, there were a total of 39 new residential building permits, which consisted of 334 villas, three 'dwellings on housing loans' and one apartment. Al Daayen saw a total of 35 new residential permits, comprising 27 villas, seven 'dwellings on housing loans' and one apartment.

Doha saw 26 new residential building permits in February, which consisted of 15 permits for villas, four for 'dwellings on housing loans' and seven apartments.

In the case of Al Shamal, there was a total of nine new residential permits, which went entirely towards villas; Al Khor saw a total of seven permits (five villas and one 'dwelling on housing loans and one others), and Al Shahaniya seven permits (four villas and three 'dwellings on housing loans').

Commercial buildings were found to be in the forefront among non-residential building permits issued in February with them constituting 48% or 15 permits, followed by mosques 23% (7 permits), industrial buildings as workshops and factories 16% (5 permits) and government buildings 13% (4 permits).

The permits for addition were largely in Al Rayan 64 (37%), Doha 43 (25%), Al Wakra 27 (16%), Umm Slal 12 (7%), Al Khor 10 (6%), Al Daayen 9 (5%) and Al Shahaniya 6 (4%).

Al Rayan and Al Daayen saw the maximum number of permits at seven each for fencing in February 2017, followed by five in Al Wakra, four in Al Khor and two in Al Shahaniya.
