New Indian envoy vows to deepen partnership with Qatar; prioritises community welfare

Newly appointed Indian ambassador Dr K Srikar Reddy has pledged to build on the strong foundations of India-Qatar relations and further expand co-operation in emerging sectors, while making the welfare of the Indian community in Qatar – estimated at more than 830,000 – a key priority during his tenure.

He was speaking at the Indian Cultural Centre at a reception organised by the apex bodies under the aegis of the Indian embassy as well as other Indian organisations in Qatar.

Community leaders, office bearers of the apex bodies, members of various organisations and a large number of community members took part in the event.

Presidents of the four apex bodies addressed the gathering and welcomed the new envoy.

"I have arrived at an important juncture in bilateral relations between both the countries, following the elevation of India-Qatar ties to a strategic partnership,” Dr Reddy said. "It is a great honour to assume the charge as ambassador of India to Qatar. I accept this with great humility and a sense of responsibility.”

"India and Qatar have long-standing ties rooted in civilisational contacts, maritime trade and people-to-people relations,” Dr Reddy said. "That co-operation has expanded in recent years across trade, investment, energy, healthcare, education, culture and tourism.”

He also noted significant potential for further co-operation in both traditional and emerging areas, including renewable energy, green hydrogen, digital public infrastructure, artificial intelligence (AI), fintech and space.

The envoy said India is seeking partners such as Qatar to contribute to its ambition of becoming a developed nation by 2047.

"We see significant opportunities for deepening and expanding our co-operation in a variety of areas,” he said, adding that he looks forward to working with academics, business leaders and professionals to identify new areas of collaboration.

Dr Reddy placed strong emphasis on the Indian community's role in strengthening bilateral ties, describing its members as a "living bridge” between India and Qatar.

He said the community had earned the trust and appreciation of Qatar’s leadership through its hard work, discipline, innovation and law-abiding nature.

"The Indian community has made a significant contribution to Qatar’s development across sectors including healthcare, education, engineering, technology and construction,” Dr Reddy noted.

He said that the embassy would work closely with Indian community organisations to address the welfare needs of community members, particularly those considered vulnerable.

According to the envoy, improving consular services will be another priority, and the embassy will serve as a "home away from home” for Indians living in Qatar.

Dr Reddy said that he had already taken steps to increase the number of daily appointment slots for consular services at the Indian Cultural Centre and Indian Community Benevolent Forum.
