Qatar resident creates coffee beans art installation for Juventus football club
A Qatar resident has created an art installation made of coffee beans for the world-renowned Italian football club Juventus, featuring portraits of two of its players who joined the team recently.
Abdul Kareem, known as Kareemgraphy, a well-known calligraffiti artist in Qatar, told Gulf Times that an agency approached him asking if he was willing to use coffee beans for an art installation with the portraits of French player Randal Kolo Muani and Bosnian player Kerim Alajbegović.
"It was a big challenge to try a medium which I had not used earlier and not familiar with. They had seen my earlier works and approached me. Approximately seven to eight kilograms of coffee beans were used for making the portraits of the two players. Dark and medium-dark coffee beans had been imported from Italy to complete the portraits,” Kareemgraphy told Gulf Times.
He said that the club posted the portraits on their social media platforms, and they have attracted a huge response from the fans and the public.
"It has been a great achievement, and it makes me happy as my work reaches global level and people are happy about my work. Moreover, I hope that it will inspire many of the upcoming artists and they will try to follow such new streams of art,” explained Kareemgraphy.
A Calligraffiti artist, Kareem specialises in creating visual art that blends traditional Arabic calligraphy with modern graffiti-style techniques. He has worked with Qatar Museums, Al Shaqab and several other national and local organisations in Qatar.
"I have done a workshop with Qatar Museums. Then I worked on a collaboration between Bentley Motors and the Museum of Islamic Arts, a bespoke project between the two parties. I have also done a public performance for horse racing at Al Shaqab,” he noted.
In 2024, Kareem teamed up with AC Milan Football Club to create a striking art installation. He stated: "It is a matter of great satisfaction that my work has been recognised and appreciated by two of the world's most famous football clubs. As a calligraffiti artist, I am grateful that my work continues to represent creativity from the region on international platforms.”
During the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, Kareemgraphy has been quite active, leaving his mark through various graffiti depicting football fever and adorning streets, walls, stadiums and buildings. Some of them included: Arhbu mural at Doha Corniche, a painting at Lusail Stadium of Lionel Messi’s trademark pointing-to-the-sky celebration, and the Now Is All mural, again at the Corniche.
Kareem says that calligraphy is something that he likes the most but at the same time he prefers to patronise street art. "I have done several graffiti works while I am a great fan of calligraphy. Therefore, I prefer to be known as a calligraffiti artist. Art is not something you see only in an exhibition hall. There are people in the street who may not be able to go to an exhibition centre. So, we have to bring the beauty to the public and therefore calligraffiti,” he added.
