Qatar ‘a cornerstone for securing long-term diplomatic solutions and lasting peace’
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Washington and Tehran is "an opportunity to restore and reinforce regional stability and prosperity”, Italy’s ambassador to Qatar Paolo Toschi told Gulf Times yesterday.
He said that Italy, through Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, has officially expressed gratitude to all mediators, "and particularly to Qatar, whose invaluable efforts have made this memorandum of understanding possible”.
"We view Qatar’s role as crucial in achieving this significant diplomatic breakthrough, which represents an opportunity to restore regional stability,” the envoy said. "Looking ahead, Qatar’s role will remain vital as we enter the next phase, which will continue to require negotiations on highly complex issues.”
He stressed that Doha had demonstrated all the credentials needed to act as an effective mediator.
"Most notably, Doha has successfully and consistently demonstrated absolute seriousness in its commitment to diplomacy,” Toschi emphasised.
On the deal’s regional implications, he said that the agreement paves the way for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway with critical regional and global impact.
"Italy is ready to do its part in securing it when conditions allow and within the proper institutional framework,” the ambassador said.
Toschi emphasised that mediation efforts led prominently by Qatar and Pakistan were indispensable in finalising the dialogue.
He noted that the scope of the agreement, warmly welcomed in a joint statement by Prime Minister Meloni alongside leaders of the UK, France, Germany, Japan, Canada, Australia, Greece, and Cyprus, "will contribute to restoring regional stability and stabilising the global economy”.
"Without any doubt, the whole world will benefit,” Toschi said.
He also said that Qatar "will remain a cornerstone for securing long-term diplomatic solutions and lasting peace in the region and beyond”.
