Within a National Vision that invests in people and creativity, Qatar continues to solidify its position as a regional hub supporting creative and cultural industries through initiatives and programmes that empower young artistic talent and enhance their presence on global platforms.
In this context, the artwork "Loudest Green" by Yasmin Sheikhi, a graduate of the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar, stands out as a model that reflects the growing role of Qatar Media City in nurturing emerging artistic voices. This is demonstrated through her participation in the "Art Destination" programme accompanying Art Basel Qatar.
The artwork is based on the idea of transforming rice waste into an illuminated sculpture that embodies the flow of information, digital waves, and media mechanisms of repetition and accumulation, in an artistic treatment that blends organic material with digital structure.
Sheikhi emphasised that the work stemmed from the question, "What are we overlooking?” She explained that rice is often perceived as a humble and ephemeral material, but she sought to give it "a voice and a lasting presence” by repurposing its waste and transforming it into a structural material that expresses digital waves and the subtle behaviours of media.
She noted that the "Art Destination” programme enabled her to expand the project's conceptual dimension and connect it to a broader creative and media context. She noted that the work faced technical and conceptual challenges, most notably ensuring the material's cohesion and its ability to form a stable structure, as well as attempting to give a tangible form to an invisible entity. She considered the experience a continuous journey of research and experimentation.
The work was showcased at Art Basel Qatar, attended by local and international cultural and artistic figures and thousands of visitors. Sheikhi considered this a pivotal moment in her artistic career, emphasising that the interest shown by prominent figures reinforced her conviction that even the simplest materials can spark meaningful global dialogues when presented within a suitable creative framework.
She affirmed that her selection as one of the winning artists in the "Art Destination” programme marks a significant turning point in her career, expressing her eagerness to continue collaborating with local creators and to foster dialogue about the sustainability of art and the materials used in creative production.
These experiences reflect the scale of the transformation taking place in Qatar’s cultural and creative landscape, driven by ongoing investment in building a supportive ecosystem for emerging talent. This contributes to strengthening the country’s cultural presence and opening broader horizons for Qatari and resident artists to access the global art scene.
