Building a lasting presence in Qatar relies on personal relationships that span decades.“Qatar is our second home. Every year, we return for the Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition and the ASJAD Exhibition,” said Mehran Mahallati, vice-president and managing partner of Mahallati Jewellery.Over three decades, the brand has built relationships that span major family milestones, moving from engagement rings and wedding sets to push presents and pieces for the next generation.“We have been part of this society for so long — and become so deeply woven into its fabric — that we have witnessed generations grow within the community. We have seen our jewellery worn first by mothers, then by grandmothers, and now by their granddaughters,” Mahallati noted.The brand was established in 1968 by founder Abdul Karim Mahallati, who began as a 15-year-old apprentice in an Iraqi gold workshop before opening his own enterprise. After expanding into Kuwait and opening a workshop in Thailand in the early 1980s, the company moved its headquarters to Dubai.His children — Mehran, Marwa, and Mohammed — later joined to run the independent family enterprise alongside extended family members who manage operations and design.Rather than relying on external corporate creative teams or static seasonal collections, design concepts originate organically within the family, he explained.Mahallati pointed out that ideas are drawn out technically by designers, but the core concepts come directly from his father and other family members.He explained that each piece is produced in Thailand by 200 artisans who combine traditional goldsmithing techniques with modern machinery and technology.“When you rely entirely on modern techniques, you risk losing some of the traditions of the past,” Mahallati pointed out.“We still follow traditional methods for the finishing, quality, cleanliness, and polishing of our jewellery. Although this approach is more time-consuming and labour-intensive, it produces a far more beautiful result,” he emphasised.The company’s commercial expansion in Qatar began in the 1990s through a close partnership with Alfardan Jewellery, anchored by a shared business vision between his father and Hussain Ibrahim Alfardan.“The close-knit, family-oriented values we share with Alfardan complemented our own perfectly, which is why we formed such a strong connection from the very beginning,” Mahallati stressed.He noted that the two founders worked closely together for decades, exchanging ideas for expansion and daily operations.
