Al Jazeera condemns YouTube’s compliance with Israel’s ban on its broadcast, urges adherence to international conventions
Al Jazeera Media Network has strongly criticised YouTube’s compliance with a decision by Israeli authorities to ban the broadcast of its channels on the platform and to block access to its websites within Israel.
In a statement issued on January 29, the Network said the move constitutes a clear violation of Article 19 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which guarantees the right to seek, receive, and impart information freely.
Al Jazeera expressed deep concern over YouTube’s response to what it described as censorial directives, stating that compliance with such measures reflects a failure to adhere to the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. The Network noted that these principles require global technology companies to safeguard freedom of expression and resist government pressures that result in the suppression of information and the silencing of independent journalism.
The Network warned that banning Al Jazeera’s digital platforms and websites on weak security grounds sends a dangerous signal that major technology companies can be co-opted as instruments of authorities hostile to freedom of expression. It added that such actions further entrench double standards in the management of digital content in conflict zones and weaken the governance of the global public sphere.
Al Jazeera stressed that the escalation forms part of a broader and systematic pattern of Israeli violations, including the killing and detention of its journalists and the closure of its offices in the occupied territories, which it said are aimed at suppressing the truth.
The Network called on YouTube and other digital content distribution companies to immediately lift the ban on its channels and to fully uphold their moral and legal responsibilities to the global audience. It also urged international bodies concerned with media freedom and human rights organisations to condemn the ban and to demand that Israeli authorities cease targeting journalistic institutions.
Additionally, Al Jazeera called for an international investigation into the ways in which technology platforms submit to censorship, highlighting the need for independent grievance mechanisms that protect media content from political pressure and uphold the rule of law.
Al Jazeera reaffirmed its commitment to reporting the full truth and said attempts at digital blocking would only strengthen its determination to fulfil its professional mission across all available platforms and means. The Network also said it reserves the right to pursue all appropriate legal measures.
