In the context of Qatar’s keenness to continue Arab political consultation and co-ordination at highest levels, comes the visit of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani to Jordan.During his visit, His Highness the Amir and Jordan’s King Abdullah II Ibn al-Hussein discussed bilateral relations and ways to support and strengthen them in various fields, in addition to exchanging views and perspectives on several regional and international issues and current developments.The visit reflects the strength of relations between the two countries and their commitment to building broad partnerships and advancing bilateral relations.His Highness the Amir’s visit to Amman takes on special significance in light of the current circumstances and the rapidly evolving developments in the region. This is also His Highness’ first visit abroad since the treacherous Israeli aggression against Qatar on Sept 9, and after the Emergency Arab-Islamic Summit hosted by Doha on Monday.Diplomatic relations between Qatar and Jordan date back to 1972, and they have witnessed remarkable development at all levels since then, while the mutual visits between the leaderships of the two countries are considered the cornerstone of these relations, as they contribute to deepening the bonds of fraternity and defining paths for future co-operation.The relations between Qatar and Jordan are characterised by ruling relations, official partnership, and they have been strengthened over the years to become close strategic partnerships, as a result of the two leaders’ mutual keenness and aspiration to push them to wider horizons, and the continuous communication at the highest level between the two countries.The two countries’ positions and visions are aligned in supporting the rights of the Palestinian people and their quest to establish an independent state. They work closely and in full coordination in international forums to alleviate the suffering of the people of the Gaza Strip. Qatari-Jordanian co-operation in the humanitarian and development fields constitutes one of the most prominent aspects of the partnership between the two countries, as they work in a co-ordinated manner to ensure the delivery of medical, relief, and shelter aid, as well as the provision of emergency medical supplies for the brotherly people in the Gaza Strip and Syria.Relations between Qatar and Jordan have historically been characterised by fraternity based on mutual respect and a shared aspiration to develop and advance them, thanks to the directives of the leaders of the two brotherly countries.Since the launch of diplomatic representation at the ambassadorial level in 1972, bilateral relations have witnessed remarkable development and growth in all fields, thanks to the wise visions of the two leaderships, who work towards the security and stability in the region.Over the years, relations between Qatar and Jordan have witnessed a surge in official visits by ministers and senior officials, resulting in the signing of a number of bilateral agreements and memorandums of understanding that strengthen the strong bilateral relations between the two brotherly countries across all political, economic, and labour fronts.Relations between Doha and Amman are governed by a set of bilateral agreements and memorandums of understanding covering co-operation in the fields of trade, economy, investment, health, culture, labour, air, maritime and tourism transport, the judiciary, customs, news exchange, standardisation activities and regulation of the employment of Jordanian workers, avoidance of double taxation, and mutual encouragement and protection of investments, in addition to the fields of public works, municipal affairs, youth and sports.The economic relations between Qatar and Jordan are based on a deep strategic partnership in investment, energy, and infrastructure. Mutual visits between trade and economic delegations have discussed cooperation in the fields of trade, economy, and mutual investments, as well as the role played by the private sector in promoting trade exchange. The Qatari-Jordanian Business Council plays an important role in strengthening co-operation between businessmen and opening up prospects for further trade and economic co-operation.The two countries look forward to building new and broader economic relations, which will be reflected in increased trade exchanges and the expansion of joint investment projects. Jordan seeks to attract new Qatari investments and expand existing ones in the real estate, tourism, industry, energy, and financial sectors.The trade balance between Jordan and Qatar continued its remarkable growth in 2024, registering a 5.6% year-on-year increase compared to 2023. According to statistics from the Qatar Planning and Statistics Authority website, the volume of trade exchange between the two last year reached nearly $250mn, compared to $236mn in 2023 and $219mn in 2022.In December 2024, Qatar Chamber participated in the first Gulf-Jordanian Investment Conference, which was held in Jordan. The working sessions focused on strengthening Jordanian-Gulf economic relations by encouraging public-private partnerships, as well as investment opportunities and facilities available in Jordan, opportunities and challenges in the transportation and logistics sectors in the GCC countries and Jordan, co-operation in tourism and medical tourism, and strategic partnerships in the areas of agriculture, food security, and the food industry.
