Former German chancellor Helmut Kohl has received a piece of the Berlin Wall as thanks for his role in reuniting Germany after the end of the Cold War.“It will always remind me of how unfree the world and the people behind the Iron Curtain were 20 years ago,” Kohl said.Germany is set to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the erection of the Wall on Saturday. The 3.6m high, 2.7-tonne piece of the Wall, which divided Berlin from 1961-1989, is to stand in the garden of Kohl’s home and was a gift from the tabloid newspaper Bild.Around 100 children were present at yesterday’s ceremony, which was presided over by the editor of Bild, Kai Diekmann. The gift was a “striking monument to our varied history”, Kohl said.Kohl was chancellor in 1989 when the East German regime began to collapse and implemented measures that eventually led to the integration of the two countries.
