Top seed Daniil Medvedev cruised into the second round of the ATP tournament in Vienna yesterday with a straight-sets victory over Nikoloz Basilashvili. The Russian won 6-2, 6-2 to set up a meeting with fellow former US Open champion Dominic Thiem, who saved two match points in a dramatic win over American Tommy Paul on Tuesday. Medvedev, the world number four, broke twice in each set and did not even face a break point as he won in only an hour.Second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas saw off home hope Dennis Novak 7-6 (7/2), 6-2 in his opening match. The Greek star will next face Borna Coric in a rematch of the Cincinnati Masters final, won by the Croatian in September. In a 7-6(2), 6-2 victory against home favourite Dennis Novak, the second-seeded Greek instantly recovered a mid-set break in the opening set. After two straight love holds, Tsitsipas was broken to love as he fell behind 3-4. He then let slip a 0/40 opening in the ensuing game before converting on his fourth break chance and never looked back, dominating the second set to advance to the second round for the third straight year in the Austrian capital.
