HE the Minister of Education and Higher Education Buthaina bint Ali al-Jabr al-Nuaimi has underlined that education is a human right and a fundamental pillar of the Qatari Constitution. This came in a speech delivered by HE the Minister at a session highlighting education in times of crisis, during her participation in the Transforming Education Summit, held at the UN headquarters in New York City.She pointed out that Qatar is one of the leading countries in the region to invest in education, thanks to the wise leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the issue of education at the global level has become one of the main pillars of the State's foreign development programmes. HE the Minister hailed the leadership role of Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Founder and Chairperson of the Education Above All Foundation, to advocate for the Sustainable Development Goals and guide towards providing education to children in conflict areas.She underlined that Qatar is at the forefront of providing international development assistance in the education sector, where it has provided support to more than 14mn children in more than 60 countries, and for many educational initiatives, programmes and projects to support education for children in conflict areas; confirming the State's commitment to work with all partners and the international system to transform education systems to enable children and youth affected by crises to access comprehensive and high-quality education opportunities.She also praised the role of Education Above All foundation in its quest to provide the most vulnerable children in developing countries with comprehensive and high-quality education, emphasising that Qatar provides every young person with the opportunity to achieve their hopes and aspirations, while transforming schools into safe, healthy and attractive learning environments.HE al-Nuaimi highlighted that the only challenge that will shape the coming decades is the deep and fundamental need to provide quality and comprehensive education for all, especially for those living in conflict areas. She expressed Qatar's appreciation for the role played by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in the service of education, also thanking the Deputy Secretary-General for her efforts in preparing for the historic summit.
