The training programme for engineers on modern irrigation systems enhances the efficiency of farms in Qatar, a senior official at the Ministry of Municipality has said."This is achieved by raising their awareness of the importance of available water resources and encouraging them to adopt advanced irrigation methods to optimise their use,” the Plant Research Department head Suwaid al-Maliki said during a recent Al Rayyan TV interview."Effective water management is very important. It is essential that engineers understand these topics. The training helps to enhance the skills of engineers or improve the performance of those working in Qatari farms,” al-Maliki said. Enhancing skills involves raising awareness among engineers and helping them understand the importance of the water resources and also increasing their awareness of using modern irrigation methods. The training programme targets a particular group of agricultural engineers, farm supervisors and farm managers in the country. Held in collaboration with Mahaseel Company for Marketing and Agricultural Services, the recent training programme was titled ‘Managing Plant Water Requirements: Principles of Irrigation Calculation and Determination’.Al-Maliki said the objectives of the programme was to learn about water resources in Qatar and to understand the available water resources and their importance in the country. "There was also a discussion of the most prominent challenges related to water resource management,” he said. The objectives included integrated water resource management and enhancing the skills of the participating engineers and learning methods for calculating irrigation water volumes.
