The Arab League welcomed the Lebanese government's adoption of a practical plan to implement the decision to restrict the possession of arms to the state, considering it a means to achieve stability in the country.Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said in a statement that the issue of the exclusivity of arms to the state is a fundamental principle of sovereignty that cannot be ignored or violated under any pretext. He emphasized that the Lebanese government's decision to allow the army a period of time to implement this decision on the ground should receive the cooperation and support of all Lebanese and those who are committed to the country's sovereignty and independent decision-making.He also stressed the need for influential forces in the international community to pressure Israel to withdraw its occupation of Lebanese territory and cease bombing targets inside Lebanon. He noted that the precise and comprehensive implementation of the ceasefire agreement reached last November is the only way to restore peace throughout Lebanon.
