RCD Media Group, in collaboration with Qatar Media City, organised a number of training courses (Masterclasses), presented by the internationally renowned Iranian director and screenwriter Asghar Farhadi in Doha during May 27- 28.Farhadi shared with participants the essence of his 25-year cinematic journey, discussed the challenges faced by writers and directors and offered his insights on how to deal with them.On the sidelines of his visit to Qatar, Farhadi’s acclaimed film The Salesman, which won the 2017 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, was screened. This film is considered one of his most prominent works, having sparked wide debate and received critical and public acclaim.Farhadi, born on May 7, 1972, in Isfahan, Iran, began his career with his first feature film, Dancing in the Dust, in 2003. His international fame came with his fourth film, About Elly (2009), which won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 59th Berlin International Film Festival.Two years later, his film A Separation was presented at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival, where it won the Golden Bear for Best Film, becoming the first Iranian film to receive this honour. The following year, A Separation won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and became the first Iranian film to win the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Oscars. It also won the César Award for Best Foreign Film, bringing its total awards to 88.In 2013, his film The Past was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Three years later, he returned with The Salesman, which competed again for the Palme d'Or and won Best Screenplay, later earning Farhadi his second Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. In 2018, his film Everybody Knows was chosen to open the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the Palme d'Or.Farhadi won the Grand Prix at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival for his film A Hero, sharing the prize with Compartment No. 6 by Finnish director Juho Kuosmanen.Farhadi is considered one of the most prominent Iranian directors who has played a key role in elevating Iranian cinema on the global stage. His films are known for their narrative style, exploring social and moral issues through multidimensional, realistic characters. Farhadi masterfully uses daily tensions and subtle details to build dramatic plots addressing themes such as honor, justice, and human relationships.
