Election enhances participation in public affairs: NHRC chief

HE the Chairman of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) Dr Ali bin Smaikh al-Marri praised the qualitative leap in the field of promoting and protecting freedoms and advancing human rights in Qatar through the Shura Council elections, which is an important step in strengthening the Qatari Shura traditions. In a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA), the NHRC chairman said that the will of the political leadership and the people was manifested through elections held by universal suffrage, pointing out that the political leadership, by approving these elections, enhanced the participation of its citizens in public affairs.Al-Marri praised the measures taken by the competent authorities to ensure the success of the voting process. He explained that the NHRC is working to ensure that the elections comply with international human rights standards, so it took the initiative from the beginning to raise awareness of the importance of the elections, and also carried out the monitoring process by accessing the electoral centers. He pointed out that in this regard, the NHRC formed a committee to monitor the Shura Council elections and conducted qualifying lectures for the observers to make them familiar with all means and tools of monitoring for free and fair elections in line with human rights principles.
