Qatar Cancer Society (QCS) in co-operation with Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Women's Wellness and Research Center (WWRC) and the National Center for Cancer Care and Research (NCCCR), has launched the 'Women's Cancer Support Groups' programme. This initiative builds on the organisation's sustainable efforts to provide psychosocial support and community support for women affected by cancer. The launch event began a series of sessions to empower women through information and emotional assistance. The programme began with an insightful discussion session featuring medical experts and specialists in the field of women’s cancers. The session addressed critical issues such as the significance of early detection, the role of HPV vaccine in cancer prevention, influence of genetic factors, treatment methods available in Qatar, and the importance of community and psychological support for cancer patients.Dr Afaf al-Ansari, senior consultant, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Gynaecological Oncology, WWRC, led the conversation on early detection. She highlighted how early screening, particularly for cervical cancer, plays a pivotal role in reducing cancer risks and improving treatment outcomes. Dr al-Ansari emphasised the value of regular check-up, noting that the HPV vaccine significantly reduces the risk of several types of cancer caused by the virus. She also discussed how early detection not only helps identify cancer early but can also minimise the side effects post-diagnosis and surgery, especially in preserving a woman’s fertility.Dr Hind Elmalik, senior consultant in medical oncology at NCCCR and assistant professor of clinical medicine WCMQ, shared her expertise on the genetic aspects of women’s cancers. She explained that genetic factors, particularly in cases of breast and ovarian cancer, can increase the risk of developing cancer. Dr al-Malik stressed the importance of understanding one’s family medical history and undergoing genetic testing to identify mutations that may elevate cancer risk. She also spoke about the advancements in chemotherapy and radiation treatments in Qatar, which are among the latest in the world, offering more effective treatments with fewer side effects. Furthermore, she emphasised the significance of early screening not only for cancer patients but for their families as well.Dana Mansour, head, Psychosocial Support Department at QCS, discussed the vital role of psychological and community support for women living with cancer. She explained how support groups help women navigate the emotional challenges associated with a cancer diagnosis and treatment. Through these support groups, patients are allowed to share their experiences and emotional struggles in a safe environment, which ultimately strengthens their mental and physical resilience. The session also provided an opportunity to hear a cervical cancer survivor's story who shared her inspiring journey with the audience. She spoke about the role of early detection and regular follow-ups in discovering her condition at an early stage, which ultimately led to her complete recovery. She highlighted that the emotional and psychological support from her family, especially her husband, played a significant role in helping her successfully overcome this challenging experience.
