GCC council praises Qatar's support for Lebanese institutions, people

The Ministerial Council of the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) at its 157th session, held on Thursday in Riyadh, praised Qatar's initiative to provide the Lebanese army with fuel for six months, valued at $30mn. The initiative is part of Qatar's commitment to support Lebanese institutions and stand by the fraternal Lebanese people.In the concluding statement, the council welcomed the joint statement issued at the second meeting of the Quintet Group on Lebanon, held in Qatar on July 17, 2023. The statement emphasised the importance of expediting the presidential elections and implementing necessary economic reforms to fulfill the responsibilities of the Lebanese government towards its citizens.The statement also expressed appreciation for Qatar's contribution to financing the crude oil withdrawal operation from the Safer floating storage off the coast of Yemen, amounting to $3mn.Furthermore, the council commended the outcomes of the 18th consultative meeting of GCC leaders, held in Jeddah on July 19, 2023. The ministers reviewed the progress of implementing the directives issued during the meeting.The council reaffirmed its unwavering stance and decisions regarding terrorism, rejecting it in all its forms and manifestations, as well as working to cut off its sources of funding and condemning all acts of terrorism.Regarding the Palestinian issue, the council affirmed its steadfast position on the centrality of the Palestinian cause. It supported the sovereignty of the Palestinian people over all the Palestinian territories occupied since June 1967, the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with its capital in East Al Quds, and the guarantee of the rights of refugees, in accordance with the Arab Peace Initiative and relevant international legitimacy resolutions.The council also stressed the need for the international community to intensify its efforts to resolve the conflict while safeguarding all the legitimate rights of the fraternal Palestinian people.Regarding Yemen, the council stressed the importance of unity in Yemen and the full implementation of the Riyadh Agreement, as well as its support for the Yemeni government and the Presidential Council in carrying out their duties and providing basic services to the citizens.In the Iraqi context, the council reaffirmed its steadfast stance and decisions regarding the fraternal Iraq, supporting efforts to combat terrorism and achieve security and stability in Iraq.Concerning the Syrian issue, the council reaffirmed its steadfast positions on preserving the territorial integrity of Syria, respecting its independence and sovereignty over its territories, and supporting a political solution to the Syrian crisis in accordance with relevant UN resolutions.Regarding Lebanon, the council reaffirmed the GCC's steadfast positions in support of the fraternal Lebanese people and its continuous support for Lebanon's sovereignty, security, and stability. It also expressed support for the Lebanese Armed Forces in safeguarding its borders and countering threats from extremist and terrorist groups.Regarding the Sudanese issue, the Ministerial Council reaffirmed the GCC's positions and decisions on preserving the security, safety, and stability of Sudan, maintaining the unity of the state and its institutions, preventing its collapse, and supporting Sudan in facing the current developments. It emphasised the necessity of de-escalation, the use of dialogue, and the unity of purpose, and called for alleviating the suffering of the Sudanese people while preventing any external interference in Sudanese affairs that could fuel conflict and threaten regional peace and security.Concerning the Russia-Ukraine crisis, the Ministerial Council reiterated the GCC's position based on principles of international law and the UN Charter, emphasising the preservation of the international order based on the respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of states, as well as non-interference in their internal affairs and the non-use of force or threats.The council expressed deep concern about the ongoing developments in Niger and Gabon and their repercussions on the security of the African continent and global peace. It called upon all parties to prioritise reason, wisdom, and national interests. (QNA)
