As they stand on the threshold of graduation, the students of Qatar Foundation’s Education City are ready to embark on their journey beyond academia.Among them are Muna al-Musalmani and Tamim Younis, graduating this year from Qatar Foundation partner university Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q), who as advocates of the Palestinian cause are committed to making a meaningful impact in the world.Muna al-Musalmani, a filmmaker, human rights advocate, and health enthusiast, hails from a background with a Palestinian mother and Qatari father. She believes that the opportunities she received at NU-Q has allowed her to become a proactive member of the community."Belonging to the broader Education City community has not only afforded me various employment opportunities but has also provided the resources and skills necessary to complete projects, papers, research articles, and more," explains al-Musalmani.Al-Musalmani's passion for Palestine has been a key aspect of her university experience. "When I felt like I was helpless, that I couldn’t do much, I created a documentary to help teach others," she explains. Her documentary chronicles her family's story alongside a broader exploration of Palestinian identity.Collaborating with other students and organisations, al-Musalmani participated in solidarity stands, amplifying the voice of Palestinian issues within the university community. Despite challenges in acquiring footage from the Palestinian conflict and facing resistance on social media platforms, she remained resilient, driven by her commitment to driving change.Looking ahead, al-Musalmani is determined to continue making a difference. "It’s difficult to change everyone’s perspective, to side with what’s right – but it’s not impossible," she says.Tamim Younis, a Palestinian born and raised in Qatar, pursued a major in Journalism at NU-Q, and highlights how the Education City environment has enriched his life by saying: "The diversity among faculty and students played a significant role in my experience."He also acknowledged the opportunity that being a QF student has given him to experience a global education in the heart of Qatar, adding: "I seized the opportunity to pursue a minor at another QF partner university, Georgetown University in Qatar.”Over the last year, Younis has participated in peaceful marches, charity initiatives, and awareness campaigns. From solidarity stands to charity bake sales, he and his peers have actively raised awareness about Palestinian rights and the ongoing struggles. “It is important to remember that your voice matters,” he said.Looking to the future, Younis is committed to furthering his advocacy efforts. From organising educational events to volunteering internationally, he remains dedicated to the Palestinian cause, embodying the spirit of resilience.Al-Musalmani and Younis are among the QF Class of 2024 graduates who will be celebrated at QF’s Convocation ceremony May 7.
