Supply to improve as sheep consignments expected from different countries

More consignments of sheep suitable for sacrifice during the upcoming Eid al-Adha are set to arrive in the local market from Syria, Turkiye, Iran and Jordan, a number of traders and salesmen at the Al Wakra market have pointed out.They told local Arabic daily Arrayah that the retail prices of most varieties at the market are slightly higher than before due to the limited supply. Besides, most of the available sheep lack the necessary conditions for proper sacrifice.The recently observed retail prices at the Al Wakra market range from QR1,000-1,200 for Jordanian sheep, QR1,250-1,300 for local sheep, QR1,400 and above for Syrian sheep and around QR1,000 for Turkish and Iranian sheep.The traders noted that sheep sellers are getting ready to cater to the expected demand for sheep ahead of Eid. These sheep will comply with the conditions and standards required for the purpose of sacrifice.Ahmed al-Rashidi, a sheep trader, said the retail prices of sheep in the local market are currently higher than before due to the limited supply and many traders are getting ready to stock up on the varieties that will be in high demand ahead of Eid. He added that traders are aware that this is the best season for them to sell sheep.Maqboul Abdallah, another trader, said some sellers give customers the option to book their preferred sheep and pay the full price before Eid in addition to imposing a fee of QR20-30 to take care of the sheep until it is delivered to the customer.He added that his barn sells only local sheep, which are preferred by many for their good-quality meat. He also expected the prices of such sheep to shoot up by QR300-400 as Eid approachesAbdallah further stressed that the local production of sheep has experienced considerable improvements over the past few years.
