Museum professionals from across the globe will gather in Qatar from May 7 to 9 for the Intercom Doha 2023 Conference, which aims "to address the challenges and obstacles facing cultural institutions, and discuss the latest innovations and trends in the museum field”.Titled ‘The Future Museum: Framing the Skills and Mindsets of the Visionary Leader Conference’, the ICOM Qatar-hosted event is organised by ICOM-Intercom in partnership with Qatar Museums, and in collaboration with CIMAM, ICOM SEE and ICOM Croatia.The event at the National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ) is set to welcome delegates from around the world, including museum directors, curators, educators, researchers, and communication professionals.A keynote speech will be delivered by NMoQ director HE Sheikha Amna al-Thani, also the acting deputy CEO of Museums, Collections and Heritage Protection; and a number of key issues will be discussed during the three-day conference.On day one, the first session will tackle ‘Profiling the Leader. Key Skills and Future Mindsets of the Museum Leader’ by Prof Dr Vlatka Hlupic, one of the world’s most influential, award-winning thought leaders on individual and organisational transformation.Session two puts a spotlight on ‘Museums as Platforms of Behavioral Change for Societal Challenges’ by Prof Dr PierLuigi Sacco, professor of Cultural Economics, IULM University Milan; senior researcher, metaLAB at Harvard, and visiting scholar at Harvard University, and special adviser to the European Commissioner for Education and Culture. Participants will also have the opportunity to take part in a guided tour at NMoQ at 5pm.On May 8, Prof Dr Desmond Hui, professor and head of the Department of Art and Design at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong, will deliver a keynote speech titled ‘The Future Museum for cross-cultural exchange of knowledge and experiences’ during the morning session, followed by presentations, questions and answer sessions, and workshops.The concluding day will see a panel of renowned guest speakers discussing ‘Museum Leadership in Qatar and the Arab Gulf’ before the guided tours and cultural activities in the afternoon.According to the organisers, the highly-anticipated conference will have one key theme: "museum leadership focused on a stable, pioneering and socially relevant future for the museum”."The ultimate goal of the conference is to form the broadest possible idea of where museum leaders are today, what major challenges they face, and what mindset is needed to successfully run museums and ensure a meaningful place within a society driven by competition and continuous development,” organisers said."Moreover, this conference has an innovative dimension thanks to the global exchange of expertise from museum leaders and experts, whether from the cultural sector, the digital world, or from the academics and consulting fields, and which aims to arrive at an authoritative understanding and possible refinement of the definition of museum leadership,” organisers added.
