Egypt police kill militant in Cairo security raid

A militant was killed and two police officers woundedin an exchange of fire during a security raid in the Egyptian capitalCairo, the interior ministry said on Sunday.Security forces raided a hideout in the eastern Cairo neighbourhoodof al-Matariya, which is used to store weapons to launch "hostileattacks," the ministry said in a statement.A shoot-out took place when the forces raided the hideout, leaving a"terrorist" dead and two officers from the central security sectorwounded, it added.The forces seized firearms, large numbers of bullets, arocket-propelled grenade and explosive materials, it added.On Wednesday, the ministry said it had killed nine Hasm militants,including one of the group's leaders, in two raids in Cairo.Egypt last year began a nationwide security operation against"terrorists and criminal organizations."The country has seen a surge in militant attacks since 2013 after thearmy deposed Mohammed Morsi, the first democratically elected butdivisive Islamist president of Egypt.Hundreds of Egyptian security personnel have been killed in attacks,mostly claimed by Islamic State.
