Greta Thunberg's New York arrival could be delayed

A racing yacht ferrying Swedish teen climateactivist Greta Thunberg is rapidly approaching New York, thedestination of her transatlantic voyage.The arrival of the Malizia could however be somewhat delayed comparedto an earlier estimate due to weakening winds, sources close to theteam told dpa on Monday.In an earlier tweet, the 16-year-old said she expects to arrive inNew York on Tuesday, writing: "Strong winds are pushing us west. Weexpect to arrive at North Cove Marina in Manhattan, New York sometimeTuesday afternoon or evening."However, the arrival could instead take place on Wednesday evening orThursday morning (local time), dpa learned. Thunberg refuses to fly, citing the CO2 emissions caused by aviation.Her now-famous weekly school strike outside the Swedish parliamentbegan on August 20, 2018. It inspired other young peopleacross Europe and beyond to demand action on climate change under the"Fridays For Future" slogan. The 18-metre long Malizia is captained by German sailor BorisHerrmann and Pierre Casiraghi of Monaco. Thunberg's father SvanteThunberg and filmmaker Nathan Grossman are also on board.In addition to weaker winds, the yacht has to sail up the HudsonRiver to the marina.The last leg of the voyage to the marina is expected to take abouttwo hours. The crew has to time the last leg with high tide,factoring in the yacht's 5-metre draught.Finally, the crew and passengers have to be cleared by US Customs andBorder Patrol, which closes at 10 pm.The Malizia racing yacht set sail on August 14 from Plymouth,England.In the United States, Thunberg plans to attend the UN Climate ActionSummit in New York on September 23 on the sidelines of the UN GeneralAssembly. She also plans to attend climate protests set for September20 and 27.Thunberg will also visit Canada and Mexico before joining the annualUN climate change conference hosted by Chile in December.
