Eight kids who mistook explosive for scrap metal killed in Sudan

Eight children were killed in Sudan when theexplosive device they mistook for scrap metal detonated, a relativesaid Sunday.The children were playing Saturday in Omdurman, outside of thecapital Khartoum, in an area that was formerly a military facility.Hamid Hussein, the brother of one of the deceased, told dpa theobject was likely a hand grenade. "The children always search for scrap metal to sell and I think theycame across a hand grenade and thought it was iron," Hussein said.The children, aged between 10 and 13, were killed instantly. "The strange object exploded while the children were playing withit," Hashim Abdel-Rahim, a Sudanese police spokesman, told the statenews agency.Police have launched an investigation.
