The Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) hosted several activities on Qatar National Sport Day in which its staff actively participated. The intergovernmental organisation attaches great value to taking part in the local community and supporting Qatar’s National Vision 2030, it said in a statement.Sport development and physical activity are critical for providing the necessary energy to deliver on the vision’s ambitions as outlined in Qatar’s sports sector strategy, the statement noted. On the eve of launching its own GECF climate initiative and considering its status as an Observer Intergovernmental Organisation to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, there is a high focus on well-being within the organisation, it said.Clearly a strong interconnection exists between addressing issues related to climate change and practising sports as an essential part of a healthy lifestyle, a GECF spokesman said. One of the highest values of the GECF as an organisation is the acknowledgement that natural gas, as the cleanest fossil fuel, has a vital role to play in the global energy mix and in achieving the sustainable development goals, he said.Natural gas offers great environmental advantages over the other energy sources as it improves air quality (by reducing smog), reduces greenhouse gases and decreases the possibility of acid rains. In this light, the organisation considers Qatar National Sport Day the ideal opportunity to take part in the variety of activities in Qatar to enhance the well-being of its staff.
