Richard Mille’s RM 51-05 Tourbillon Oryx will be unveiled and available for purchase at the Qatar Show later this month, it has been announced. The full proceeds of the sale of this limited-edition piece, the first of only three being produced, will be donated to “further the vision and mission” of Education Above All Foundation in the region and around the globe, a press statement noted. The Qatar Show will be held at Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre from February 20 to 25.“Richard Mille timepieces have become synonymous with haute horology, exquisite artistry and elegance. In 2019, Richard Mille launches the RM 51-05 Tourbillon Oryx, a tribute to this majestic antelope native to the Arabian Peninsula. It is the latest addition to the Richard Mille family of jewellery watches,” the statement said. The oryx is a genus of four large antelope species, three of which are native to the arid and semi-arid regions of Africa and the fourth to the Arabian Peninsula. The Arabian Oryx, the smallest of the four, a desert dweller with broad hooves, is capable of enduring 50C in summer and walking long distances (up to 70km in a single night). Declared extinct in the wild in 1972, the Arabian Oryx was saved by conservation efforts in captivity. Some were brought to private collections in Qatar and since 1982 they have been slowly reintroduced to the wild. An enduring symbol for the region, the oryx is the national animal of Qatar. Adopted as the logo of Qatar Airways and the official mascot of the 2006 Asian Games held in Qatar, it is much loved and revered. The RM 51-05 Tourbillon Oryx has a white gold case fully set with over 1,000 diamonds and detailed with black sapphires. Sitting above the tourbillon at the base of the dial is an intricately carved oryx head, also in white gold and set with diamonds and black sapphires. Its majestic horns, PVD-coated white gold, reach to the upper crescent of the dial culminating at four minutes to and four minutes past 12, respectively.“An artistic and imaginative feat, this symbiosis between fine watchmaking and fine jewellery will delight anyone who has been lucky enough to admire the oryx in the wild and marvel at this rare antelope’s survival,” the statement added. The RM 51-05 Tourbillon Oryx is limited to only three pieces and is exclusive to the EMEA region.
