DICID participates in Global Forum of UN Alliance of Civilizations

The Doha International Centre for Interfaith Dialogue (DICID) has participated in the 8th Global Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) in New York.The UNAOC was attended by more than 1,000 participants from civil society organisations and stakeholders.This is the first time that the UNAOC has been held in New York after it was held in Madrid, Istanbul, Doha, Rio de Janeiro, Vienna, Bali and Baku.DICID Chairman, Dr Ibrahim bin Saleh al-Nuaimi, said that the forum included several sessions and seminars on interfaith dialogue, and stressed tolerance and avoiding extremism, saying this is what is needed in the world which is witnessing a rise of right-wing nationalists and religious extremism.“Transnational terrorism and religions have become a recurring feature of the news bulletins. It is important to stop a bit, to discuss our reality rationally, to work to support dialogue, to affirm the unity of the human origin, and to work on the alliance of civilisations to achieve that”.Al-Nuaimi, who represented the DICID in the forum, stressed that Qatar was and will remain an oasis of peace and love in a tense environment, adding that this is what the world observes and is reflected by everyone who visits Qatar or lives on its soil, stressing in this context the importance of spreading this culture globally, and considering it a healthy model of coexistence between cultures.The forum discussed various topics that are dedicated to mutual understanding, including the global citizenship education, the inter-religious and intercultural dialogue in educating societies about the importance of understanding others and peaceful coexistence in the service of future generations, in addition to the issue of refugees and the role of countries in containing and educating them to be active when they return to their home countries or when they settle in the countries of asylum.It also discussed another topic under the title “Digital Diplomacy: Online Citizen Engagement and Social Media Platforms as Mechanisms for Prevention and Countering Online Hate Speech”, in addition to the role of women in sustaining peace processes. – QNA
